The three classic sights of Ooty sit within a few kilometres of each other: the lake, the Botanical Garden and the Rose Garden. Together they make an easy, relaxed day, ideal for families with children or older parents.
Government Botanical Garden
Laid out in the 1840s, the Botanical Garden spreads over terraced lawns on the slopes of Doddabetta. Look out for the fossilised tree trunk, the Italian garden, the fern house and the huge old trees. The Ooty Flower Show is held here every May and draws big crowds.
Government Rose Garden
One of the largest rose gardens in India, with thousands of varieties planted on terraces facing the town. Roses are at their best from April to June. Climb to the top terrace for a view across Ooty.
Ooty Lake
The lake was created in the 1820s and is now Ooty’s most popular spot for boating. Rowing, pedal and motor boats are usually available from the boat house. The Thread Garden, with flowers made entirely of thread, is right next to it.
Practical tips
- The gardens open in the morning and close around 6 pm. Small entry and camera fees apply.
- Go early on weekends: parking near the lake and the Botanical Garden fills up by late morning.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Both gardens are on slopes with many steps.
- Carry a jacket. Even sunny afternoons can turn cold and misty.
