At 2,637 metres, Doddabetta is the highest peak in the Nilgiris and the best viewpoint around Ooty. On a clear morning you can see across the hills to Coonoor and, on the best days, the plains beyond. It pairs perfectly with a visit to a working tea factory on the same road.

Doddabetta Peak

  • The road climbs through eucalyptus and shola forest to a car park near the top.
  • A short walk leads to the viewing area and the telescope house.
  • Go early: by late morning the peak is often wrapped in mist and the queues for parking grow long.

Tea Factory & Museum

On the way back down, stop at the Doddabetta tea factory. You can watch fresh leaves being withered, rolled and dried, learn about the history of Nilgiri tea, and taste and buy fresh tea and homemade chocolates.

Tips

  • It is several degrees colder at the top than in town. Bring a warm jacket and a cap.
  • The peak is in a reserve forest area, so do not feed the animals or leave plastic behind.
  • Allow about three hours for the peak and the tea factory together.
