Ooty (Udhagamandalam) packs its best sights into a small area, so a well-planned day or two covers most of what first-time visitors want to see. Here is a simple plan that avoids backtracking and the worst of the traffic.

Day 1: lake, gardens and town

  • Morning: start at the Government Botanical Garden soon after it opens, before the tour buses arrive. Allow about two hours.
  • Late morning: walk or drive down to Charing Cross and St. Stephen’s Church, one of the oldest churches in the Nilgiris.
  • Lunch: Commercial Road has plenty of simple restaurants and the famous Ooty bakeries.
  • Afternoon: the Government Rose Garden, then Ooty Lake for a boat ride and the Thread Garden next door.
  • Evening: pick up homemade chocolates and tea, then head back early. Ooty evenings get cold quickly.

Day 2: peaks, tea and forests

  • Early morning: drive up to Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the Nilgiris, before the mist rolls in.
  • On the way back: stop at the Tea Factory & Museum to see how Nilgiri tea is made.
  • Afternoon: head west to the Pine Forest and the rolling grasslands of Wenlock Downs (the “9th Mile” film shooting spot).
  • If you have time: continue to Pykara Falls and Pykara Lake, about 20 km from town.

Tips

  • Weekends and school holidays (April–June, Christmas) are very crowded. Weekdays are far calmer.
  • Carry a warm layer all year, and a rain jacket from June to September.
  • Most sights close by about 6 pm. Start early to fit everything in.
