Vaikunta Ekadasi is the biggest festival of the year at the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, and lakhs of devotees come for it. Rooms in and around Srirangam fill up weeks ahead, so planning early matters.

When is it?

It falls in the Tamil month of Margazhi, in December or early January, at the end of a festival period of about 20 days known as Pagal Pathu and Ra Pathu. The temple announces the exact dates each year.

The Paramapada Vasal opening

The highlight is the opening of the Paramapada Vasal (also called Sorgavasal) in the early hours of Ekadasi. Devotees queue from the night before, and the crowds continue through the day.

Tips for the day

  • Book your stay as soon as your dates are fixed.
  • Expect road closures and long walks near the temple; keep elders and children with you.
  • Carry water and a light snack, and wear modest, comfortable clothing.
  • Check the official timings and rules close to the date.

Staying a little away from the crowds

Many families prefer to stay in the city and travel in for darshan. Our homes in Ramalinga Nagar are about 10 km from Srirangam, with space for the whole family to rest between visits. See Srirangam temple timings and dress code.
