Our Trichy homes have full kitchens, so many guests like to buy fresh produce and cook a home meal, especially families and longer stays. Visiting a local market is also one of the best ways to see daily life in Trichy. Here is where to go.

Gandhi Market

The city’s biggest and oldest market, in the old city near the Rockfort. Wholesale and retail traders sell vegetables, fruit, flowers and bananas for the whole region. Go early in the morning for the freshest produce and the full buzz. Wear closed shoes, since the floors can be wet.

Uzhavar Sandhai (farmers’ market), Anna Nagar

Uzhavar Sandhai is a Tamil Nadu government scheme where farmers sell directly to buyers, with no middlemen. Prices are fixed each day and displayed at the market. Trichy’s Uzhavar Sandhai is in Anna Nagar and runs in the morning. It is a good place for fresh vegetables, greens, herbs, bananas and tender coconut. Check the displayed rate before you pay.

Golden Rock (Ponmalai) Sunday shandy

A large weekly market held on Sundays near the Golden Rock railway colony, with vegetables, fruit, groceries and household goods. Go in the morning, before it gets hot and crowded.

Teppakulam flower market

For jasmine, garlands and flowers for temple visits, the stalls around Teppakulam at the foot of the Rockfort are the place to go.

Finding organic produce

Trichy does not have one big weekly organic market. The best ways to find organic or naturally grown food are:

  • Ask the farmers at the Uzhavar Sandhai. Some grow without chemicals and are happy to tell you.
  • Look for organic and natural food stores in the residential areas, which stock millets, cold-pressed oils, jaggery and pulses.
  • Watch for organic and millet melas, which are held from time to time in the city.
  • Ask our team. We are happy to point you to what is open during your stay.

Market tips

  • Carry a cloth bag. Many markets discourage plastic.
  • Small change and UPI both help; some farmers prefer cash.
  • Wash fruit and vegetables well before eating.
