If you ask anyone in Trichy where to shop, they will point you to the old city around Malaikottai, the Rockfort. The lanes of Singarathope, Chinna Kadai Street, Big Bazaar Street and the area around Teppakulam have been the city’s shopping heart for generations. Big textile showrooms sit next to small family shops and street stalls, and the Rockfort rises right above it all.
Where to go
- Chinna Kadai Street: the classic street for sarees and textiles, from everyday cottons to silk for weddings, plus jewellery and household goods in the lanes around it.
- Singarathope: a busy market area with clothing, fancy jewellery, bangles and accessories. There is also a Poompuhar showroom, the Tamil Nadu government handicrafts chain, if you want handicrafts and handloom.
- Big Bazaar Street: wholesale and retail shops for groceries, steel and brass vessels and everyday items.
- Teppakulam: the temple tank at the foot of the Rockfort, ringed by bazaars and a well-known flower market.
What to buy
- Sarees and dress materials, including Kanchipuram-style silks and cottons. Large showrooms such as Saratha’s are known across Tamil Nadu.
- Steel and brass vessels, lamps and pooja items, good gifts to take home.
- Jasmine and flower garlands from the Teppakulam stalls, especially if you are visiting a temple.
- Sweets: Bazaar Street is home to Yaanai Mark Nei Mittai Kadai, a sweet shop over a hundred years old, famous for its large boondi packed in bamboo baskets. Read more in our Trichy OGs guide.
Tips for a smooth visit
- Go in the morning or late afternoon. Evenings, weekends and the weeks before Deepavali and Pongal are very crowded.
- Parking is hard in the narrow lanes. Park a little away or take an auto and walk.
- Showrooms have fixed prices; at street stalls polite bargaining is normal.
- UPI works almost everywhere, but carry some cash for small stalls.
- Keep phones and wallets in a front pocket or zipped bag in the crowd.
