Pondicherry (Puducherry) has a reputation for boutique hotels and cafés, but it is easy to enjoy on a budget. Here is how.

Stay a little outside the centre

Rooms in White Town are the most expensive, especially at weekends. A homestay or guest house a short drive away, such as near Villianur or Ousteri Lake, costs much less and is quieter, and you can still reach the beach in 20 to 30 minutes.

Getting around

Renting a scooter or a bicycle is the cheapest and most flexible way to explore; carry your licence and wear a helmet. Shared autos and city buses run along the main roads.

Free and low-cost things to do

  • Walk the Promenade at sunrise or in the evening, when the road is closed to traffic.
  • Explore the colourful streets of White Town and the Tamil Quarter.
  • Visit Manakula Vinayagar temple and the Sacred Heart Basilica.
  • See the Auroville Visitor Centre and the Matrimandir viewing point.
  • Watch the birds at Ousteri Lake in the cooler months.

Eat well for less

Local messes and South Indian restaurants away from the seafront serve generous meals at a fraction of café prices. Try a banana-leaf lunch, and save the French bakeries for a treat.

When to go

November to February has the best weather. Visit on weekdays for lower room rates and quieter streets, and avoid long weekends if you can.
