The nine Navagraha temples, one for each planet, are spread around Kumbakonam, about 90 km from Trichy. Many families visit all nine in one trip, and Trichy is a comfortable base before and after.

The nine temples

  • Suryanar Kovil (Sun)
  • Thingalur (Moon)
  • Vaitheeswaran Koil (Mars)
  • Thiruvenkadu (Mercury)
  • Alangudi (Jupiter)
  • Kanjanur (Venus)
  • Thirunallar (Saturn), near Karaikal
  • Thirunageswaram (Rahu)
  • Keezhperumpallam (Ketu)

How many days?

Two days is comfortable, because temples close in the afternoon and the roads between them are slow. Seeing all nine in one day is possible with an early start and a hired car, but tiring for elders.

A simple route

Day 1: drive from Trichy towards Thingalur and Kumbakonam, visiting the temples nearest to the town. Day 2: cover the temples towards the coast, including Vaitheeswaran Koil, Thiruvenkadu, Keezhperumpallam and Thirunallar, then drive back. Hire a driver who knows the route; they can order the temples around opening times.

Tips

  • Check temple timings before you set out; most close from around noon to 4 pm.
  • Carry water, snacks and a bag for footwear.
  • Dress traditionally.
