One day is enough to see Puducherry’s highlights if you start early and rest through the hottest hours. This plan works well from our room in Pathukannu, which is about 14 km from the seafront and 19 km from Auroville.

Morning: Promenade Beach and the French Quarter

  • Sunrise on Promenade Beach (Rock Beach): the seafront is lovely early in the morning, when locals come out to walk.
  • The French Quarter (White Town): walk the quiet streets of yellow and white colonial houses, the Our Lady of Angels church and the Aurobindo Ashram area.
  • Manakula Vinayagar Temple is a few minutes’ walk away. See our Pondicherry temples guide.

Midday: lunch and rest

Have lunch in town, then head back for a rest in the air-conditioned room during the afternoon heat.

Afternoon: Auroville

  • Start at the Visitors Centre, which explains the idea of Auroville.
  • Walk to the Matrimandir viewpoint to see the golden dome. Going inside the Matrimandir needs advance booking, so check the official Auroville website if you want to.
  • Browse the cafés and shops near the Visitors Centre.

Evening: back to the sea or the lake

Return to the seafront for the evening crowd and street food, or, if you are staying with us, enjoy a quieter sunset at Ousteri Lake, just 3 km away.

Practical tips

  • Autos and app cabs are easy to find; hire one for half a day for Auroville.
  • Swimming at Promenade Beach is not safe because of the rocks and waves. If you want to swim, go to a sandy beach such as Paradise or Serenity Beach and follow lifeguard advice.
  • Weekends and holidays are busy; weekdays are calmer.
