Trichy is one of the best temple towns in South India, with several famous temples only a short drive from one another. Here is how to plan your visit so you see the important temples without spending the whole day in traffic and queues.

The main temples

  • Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam: one of the largest functioning temple complexes in the world, and the first of the 108 Divya Desams. See our Srirangam tips.
  • Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval: the water temple among the five element temples of Shiva. Read the guide.
  • Rockfort Ucchi Pillayar Temple: the Ganesha temple on top of the rock, with the best view in the city. Read the guide.
  • Samayapuram Mariamman Temple: one of Tamil Nadu’s most visited Amman temples. Read the guide.
  • Vayalur Murugan Temple: a peaceful Murugan temple on the western edge of town. Read the guide.

One-day plan

  1. Early morning: Srirangam. Start as early as you can. The temple is huge, so allow two to three hours.
  2. Late morning: Thiruvanaikaval. It is only a few kilometres away, so it is easy to go straight on.
  3. Afternoon: rest. The middle of the day is hot and many temples close for a few hours. Go back to your stay for lunch and a rest.
  4. Evening: Rockfort. Climb up for sunset over the Kaveri, then explore the shops below.

Two-day plan

Day 1: follow the one-day plan above.

Day 2: drive to Samayapuram early in the morning to avoid the queues, rest through the afternoon, then spend a quiet evening at Vayalur Murugan Temple.

Practical tips

  • Dress: modest, traditional clothing is best everywhere. Cover shoulders and knees.
  • Footwear: you will remove it at every temple, so slip-on sandals save time.
  • Timings: most temples open early in the morning, close for a few hours around midday and reopen in the evening.
  • Transport: a cab or auto for the day is the easiest way to move between temples, especially with children or elders.
  • Festivals: Vaikunta Ekadasi at Srirangam and the big festivals at Samayapuram draw huge crowds. Book early if you are coming for them.

Where to stay

Our two homes in Ramalinga Nagar, the Ground Floor and the First Floor, are entire 2-bedroom houses for up to 5 guests each, with air-conditioned bedrooms and a kitchen. They make an easy base for temple visits across Trichy: start early, come back to rest through the afternoon heat, and head out again in the evening. You can check free dates and book directly.

Timings, dress rules and ticket charges can change, especially on festival days. Please check locally before your visit.
