Tiruchirappalli, usually called Trichy, sits on the banks of the Kaveri river in central Tamil Nadu. It is a city of temples, markets and history, and a convenient base for exploring the region.
Rock Fort and Ucchi Pillayar Temple
The Rock Fort is Trichy’s best-known landmark. A long flight of steps cut into the rock leads past shrines to the Ucchi Pillayar Temple at the top, with wide views over the city and the river. Go early in the morning or near sunset when it is cooler.
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam
On the island of Srirangam, between the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers, the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of the largest temple complexes in India. Allow at least a few hours to walk through its courtyards and towering gopurams.
Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval
A short distance from Srirangam, this Shiva temple is admired for its long pillared corridors and is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, associated with the element of water.
Kallanai (Grand Anicut)
An easy drive from the city, the ancient Kallanai dam across the Kaveri is a pleasant stop, especially when the river is flowing.
Markets and food
The streets around the Rock Fort and the main bazaar areas are good for shopping, from textiles to everyday goods. Try local South Indian breakfasts and filter coffee wherever you stay.
