After the crowds of the city’s big temples, Kumara Vayalur feels wonderfully calm. This temple to Lord Murugan sits among green fields on the western side of Trichy, and is a favourite with local families for a quiet evening visit.
About the temple
- Lord Murugan is worshipped here with his consorts Valli and Deivanai. The temple also has an ancient shrine to Lord Shiva (Agneeswarar).
- The temple is closely linked with the saint-poet Arunagirinathar, who composed hymns in praise of Murugan of Vayalur.
- A large temple tank and the open setting make it a pleasant place to sit and spend some time.
Best time to visit
Evenings are lovely, when the light is soft and the evening pooja is performed. Kiruthigai days, Thai Poosam and Skanda Sashti are special occasions for Murugan devotees and are much busier.
Tips for your visit
- Dress modestly and leave footwear at the entrance.
- The approach is through open countryside, so it is an easy and pleasant drive.
- There are fewer food options right at the temple than in the city, so plan meals accordingly.
Getting there
Vayalur is on the western edge of Trichy, one of the closest major temples to Ramalinga Nagar, about 7 km away and usually a 15 to 25 minute drive. You can easily combine it with an evening at the Rockfort or a visit to Uraiyur.
Where to stay
Our two homes in Ramalinga Nagar, the Ground Floor and the First Floor, are entire 2-bedroom houses for up to 5 guests each, with air-conditioned bedrooms and a kitchen. They make an easy base for temple visits across Trichy: start early, come back to rest through the afternoon heat, and head out again in the evening. You can check free dates and book directly.
Timings, dress rules and ticket charges can change, especially on festival days. Please check locally before your visit.
