The Rockfort is the landmark you see from almost everywhere in Trichy: a huge rock rising out of the old town, with a small temple to Lord Ganesha, the Ucchi Pillayar, sitting right on top. Climbing it is one of the first things most visitors do, and the view from the summit makes every step worthwhile.
What you will see
- Manikka Vinayagar temple at the foot of the rock, where the climb begins.
- Thayumanaswamy temple about halfway up, a large Shiva temple cut into the rock with fine pillared halls.
- Ucchi Pillayar temple at the summit, a small shrine to Lord Ganesha.
- The view: from the top you can see the Kaveri river, the gopurams of Srirangam and Thiruvanaikaval, and the whole city spread out below.
The story behind it
According to local legend, Vibhishana was carrying an idol of Lord Ranganatha to Lanka when Lord Ganesha, appearing as a young boy, placed it on the ground at Srirangam, where it stayed for ever. Vibhishana chased the boy, who ran up the rock and revealed himself as Ganesha. That is why the temple at the top is dedicated to him, and why the Rockfort and Srirangam are so closely linked for pilgrims.
The climb
The path to the top is a long series of steps cut into the rock, partly covered. Most people reach the summit in 20 to 40 minutes, with stops on the way. The steps are steep in places, so take your time, and hold the railings where they are provided.
- Footwear is left at the bottom, so the stone can get very hot by late morning. Go early or in the evening.
- Carry a small water bottle. There is little shade near the top.
- Older visitors and young children can do the climb at a slow pace, but it is not suitable for anyone with knee or breathing problems.
Best time to visit
Early morning is cool and calm. Sunset is the most popular time: the light over the Kaveri and Srirangam is beautiful, and the town lights come on as you walk down. Weekends and festival days are busier, especially during Vinayagar Chathurthi.
Shopping nearby
The streets around the Rockfort, including the busy NSB Road and the Big Bazaar Street area, are full of shops selling textiles, brass, pooja items and snacks. It is a good place to pick up gifts after the climb.
Getting there
The Rockfort is in the centre of the old town, about 6 km from Ramalinga Nagar, usually a 15 to 25 minute drive or auto ride depending on traffic. Parking close to the entrance is limited, so an auto or cab is often easier.
